To enter Russia for any purpose, a U.S. citizen must possess a valid U.S. passport and a bona fide visa issued by a Russian Embassy or Consulate. It is impossible to obtain an entry visa upon arrival, so travelers must apply for their visas well in advance
A visa to the Russian Federation is a document that allows you to stay in Russia for a specific period of time. The visa lists entry/exit dates, your name, passport details, and your purpose of travel. Please note that your Russian visa is an exit permit in the same way it is an entry permit: if you lose it or stay beyond your designated departure date, leaving the country could be more troublesome than entering it.
To apply for a Russian Tourist Visa, you will need the following documents:
Original passport, valid for more than 6 months with at least 2 blank pages for your visa and entry/exit stamps.

It takes between 4 working days and 6 weeks to get your visa depending upon the type that you need.
In general, Russia is a safe country, especially if you’re traveling as a tourist to large cities (such as Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vladivostok, etc.) or if you are making the Trans-Siberian route. The earliest date when you can apply for your Russian visa is 90 days before your date of departure. Our suggestion is to apply at least three weeks before your travels, in order to prevent any unpredictable delays that may occur due to the embassy’s visa processing.
